St. John's in the distance, fronted by Signal Hill. The ocean looks calm, but explodes with surprising ferocity on the rocks at Cape Spear. Waves crash onto the shore at Cape Spear. Signal Hill earned a permanent place in history when Marconi successfully made transatlantic radio contact in 1901. On Thursday, a cruise ship was in town. I took this picture just as it began steaming away. Soon thereafter, Signal Hill was engulfed in diesel fumes.

A sailboat plies the waters off St. John's, as seen from Signal Hill. View to the south from Ladies' Lookout, Signal Hill, St. John's. It's hard to see in the picture, but the white dots are hundreds of seagulls. They were flying around enjoying the wind. Pippy Park reminded me of Forest Park in Portland, although it's even bigger--at least 1/3 the size of the city itself. Fallen trees are evidence of the harsh Newfoundland winds.

After the thin forests I saw in other parts of Newfoundland, the lush ferns and moss of Mount Scio were a welcome surprise. Is it a car or a spaceship? The tail fins make this ancient Cadillac look ready for blast-off! There were dozens of classic cars, some with original front plates from as far away as California. My dad would have liked to see this 1956 Chevrolet up close and personal!
